Roped onto a glacier tongue
Iceland made the glacier walk a half-day activity. You are fitted with crampons and a harness at the car park, walk twenty minutes over moraine, and then you are on ice, stepping around mill holes and looking down into water that has not seen the sun. The Table Mountain morning
Few cities keep a thousand-metre mountain inside the suburbs. Summit days are the first thing cancelled: fog on the ridge, ice on the stairs, forty degrees on an exposed slope. The answer is to drop altitude rather than the plan. Forest trails hold their shade, coast paths take the wind, gorges stay cool at noon and a cave stays fifteen degrees all year.
