Where the walking is

Six countries that fill their day-hike minibuses first.

Red rock and giant sequoia, Atlas villages an hour from a souk, a glacier tongue off the ring road, laurel forest on a levada, an active summit in Sicily and the sierra behind the beach. Each one with the best guided walk in it.

The United States

American day hikes come in four flavours. Pick the one your legs want.

A guided walk in the States is rarely about the distance. It is about the permit, the shuttle, the heat and the guide who knows which trailhead has parking at seven. Four kinds of day, and what boarding each one costs.

First light and last light

The two hours that decide whether a hike was worth the alarm.

Sunrise walks start in the dark and end with breakfast at altitude. Sunset walks trade the cold start for a head torch on the way down. Both dodge the heat, both empty the trail, and both need a guide who knows the path unlit.

Every dawn hike
High ground

Summit hikes, volcano rims and glacier walks: the days people fly for.

These are the walks with a real top. A crater rim you reach in the dark, a lava field still warm underfoot, a glacier tongue you cross roped to a guide. Longer, colder and steeper than the rest of the site, and worth every hour.

Most-walked

The guided hikes more walkers book than any others.

Iceland

In Iceland the hike is short and the ground is moving.

Half an hour from the ring road you can be roped onto a glacier tongue, standing in a blue ice cave or crossing a fresh lava field. Nothing here is long. Everything here needs crampons, a helmet and somebody who reads the crevasses.

What it costs

What a guided day hike actually costs, from waterfall walk to glacier day.

Every hike on the site, sorted by what you hand over. Plenty of the best walking in the world comes in under the price of a taxi to the trailhead.

Under $50

Half-day waterfall walks, valley trails and the village hikes an hour out of town.

$50-150

Full days: crater rims, gorge crossings, glacier tongues and the long ridge routes.

$150 and up

Private guides, helicopter-free wilderness days and the one big walk of the trip.

Named ground

Three walks that exist nowhere else on earth.

Waterfalls and forest paths are everywhere. A crater you can stand in, a glacier you can walk into and a flat-topped mountain rising straight out of a city are not.

Still awake

Walking on a live volcano

Batur, Etna, Bromo and Fuego all take walkers onto ground that is still venting. The hike is short by mountain standards and the climb is done in the dark, because the summit is worth having before the cloud arrives and because the rock holds yesterday's heat. Guides are not decoration here: the safe line up a cinder cone changes with the season and with the mountain's mood.

Blue ice

Roped onto a glacier tongue

Iceland made the glacier walk a half-day activity. You are fitted with crampons and a harness at the car park, walk twenty minutes over moraine, and then you are on ice, stepping around mill holes and looking down into water that has not seen the sun. Winter adds the ice caves, which form and collapse each year, so no two seasons offer the same route.

Straight up from the city

The Table Mountain morning

Few cities keep a thousand-metre mountain inside the suburbs. Platteklip Gorge goes up the front of it in a relentless two and a half hours of stone staircase, with the Atlantic opening behind you the whole way. Most walkers ride the cable car down. The wind decides whether that is an option, which is the one thing your guide will check before you start.

Permits and pre-dawn pickups

Four hikes you cannot simply turn up and walk.

Most of this site can be arranged the night before over dinner. These four run on tribal permits, guide monopolies, pre-dawn pickups and a mountain that closes itself when it feels like it.

  1. 01Lower Antelope Canyon Hiking TourThe canyon sits on Navajo land and cannot be entered without a Navajo guide. Every slot is timed, and the light-shaft hours sell out first.
  2. 02Sunrise Mount Batur Guided Hike with BreakfastPickup is around two in the morning to be on the rim for sunrise. Nobody arranges that at breakfast on the day.
  3. 03Mount Etna: Summit Guided Hiking Tour up to 3,400 mAbove roughly 2,900 metres the summit craters are guide-only, and access closes outright when the mountain is in eruption.
  4. 04Ice Cave Tour and Glacier HikeCrampons, harness and a rope are the entry ticket. Glacier operators cap group sizes hard, so winter dates go weeks ahead.
When the ridge is shut

Rain, heat and snow close the high paths. The walking does not stop.

Summit days are the first thing cancelled: fog on the ridge, ice on the stairs, forty degrees on an exposed slope. The answer is to drop altitude rather than the plan. Forest trails hold their shade, coast paths take the wind, gorges stay cool at noon and a cave stays fifteen degrees all year.
