Start before dawn with an English-speaking driver such as Rosbert, André, or Luis. See Pico do Arieiro at sunrise, optionally walk part of the PR1 trail, stop at Guindaste’s glass platform, then follow the 7 km Larano coast path. Small groups, hotel pickup, and about seven hours make this a strong active half-day.

I have an average fitness level but did find the hike very hard due to the elevation. our guide was very accommodating with lots of breaks for people to catch their breath and get used to the altitude. Start before sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, hike toward Madeira’s 1,862-meter Pico Ruivo, then finish at Achada do Teixeira for a return transfer. The 11-kilometer route takes about 4.5 hours, with a maximum of eight people, hotel pickup, and clear route guidance from drivers such as Michael, Miguel, and Ulisses.

Start before dawn with Nelio or Fabio at Pico do Arieiro, then walk PR1’s Stairway to Heaven and the historic PR3 Donkey Trail. Expect roughly 6 to 8 hours, about 10 kilometers of hiking, flexible pacing, a forest café stop, and an optional Monte drop-off.

You’ll hike with a private mountain guide from Up Mountain Madeira, starting around 8 am from Funchal or Caniço. Nico handles transport, while guides such as David lead a custom route suited to your group. Pico do Areeiro may be possible, but the plan can change for weather, fires, or trail conditions.
“Unfortunately due to the fires, I was unable to do Pico do Areeiro, however, Nico was very communicative throughout the process and suggested another hike which was beautiful. Do not book with any other companies. I unfortunately had two other companies cancel for other hikes, both within days of when I was scheduled.
