Start before dawn with an English-speaking driver such as Rosbert, André, or Luis. See Pico do Arieiro at sunrise, optionally walk part of the PR1 trail, stop at Guindaste’s glass platform, then follow the 7 km Larano coast path. Small groups, hotel pickup, and about seven hours make this a strong active half-day.

I have an average fitness level but did find the hike very hard due to the elevation. our guide was very accommodating with lots of breaks for people to catch their breath and get used to the altitude. Start before sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, hike toward Madeira’s 1,862-meter Pico Ruivo, then finish at Achada do Teixeira for a return transfer. The 11-kilometer route takes about 4.5 hours, with a maximum of eight people, hotel pickup, and clear route guidance from drivers such as Michael, Miguel, and Ulisses.

Start before dawn with Nelio or Fabio at Pico do Arieiro, then walk PR1’s Stairway to Heaven and the historic PR3 Donkey Trail. Expect roughly 6 to 8 hours, about 10 kilometers of hiking, flexible pacing, a forest café stop, and an optional Monte drop-off.

Start before dawn with pickup in Funchal or Caniço, then hike from Pico do Areeiro toward Pico Ruivo with a certified guide such as David or Ronaldo. Expect steep steps, changing mountain weather, dramatic views, and a final stop at Santana’s traditional houses.

Start before dawn for sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, then choose an optional 1.2-kilometre PR1 hike or walk Madeira’s Larano coastal trail. Rosbert and the Wildermadeira team handle the driving, while you follow the routes independently. Expect mountain weather, steep sections, and a group of up to 16 people.

You’ll hike with a private mountain guide from Up Mountain Madeira, starting around 8 am from Funchal or Caniço. Nico handles transport, while guides such as David lead a custom route suited to your group. Pico do Areeiro may be possible, but the plan can change for weather, fires, or trail conditions.
“Unfortunately due to the fires, I was unable to do Pico do Areeiro, however, Nico was very communicative throughout the process and suggested another hike which was beautiful. Do not book with any other companies. I unfortunately had two other companies cancel for other hikes, both within days of when I was scheduled. Nico was able to get me in for another custom hike which was equally as beautiful. His guides know all of the secrets to the hikes I would have never know, as in different routes, not as busy of hikes, etc. Highly recommended them!”
Start early from Funchal or Caniço and hike PR8 across Madeira’s eastern peninsula with a certified mountain guide. Expect a small group of up to eight, sunrise views, a three-hour walk, and pickup and drop-off in an air-conditioned vehicle. Guide David may lead your outing.

Start before dawn at Pico do Areeiro, watch sunrise, then hike 7 km to Pico Ruivo and descend 2.5 km to Achada do Teixeira. Paulo, a certified local mountain guide, leads private groups of up to four, with transport, route access, and a Santana stop included.

Leave Funchal before dawn with a private English, Portuguese, or Spanish-speaking driver-guide. Reach Pico do Areeiro for sunrise, then choose a 3-kilometer walk toward the Stairway to Heaven. Your guide adjusts the outing to your pace and returns you to Funchal.

You’ll leave Funchal at 4:00 a.m. with a driver-guide, hike about an hour to Madeira’s 1,862-meter Pico Ruivo, then tour the island by private 4x4. Expect cold, possible rain, torches for the trail, and a small group of no more than eight people.
